As China's pre-eminent custom knifemaker, Paul Chen's blades usually start at about £400 and work up to several thousand.
Thankfully though, he has created the 'practical' range which are swords designed for everyday use by the martial artist but without all the expensive trimmings (rayskin underwrap, silk, artwork etc.)
They have a genuine differentially heat treated blade which rivals any folded blade for strength and quality.
Measures 39.5" Overall, the 27" high tension carbon steel blade is very sharp, forged and differentially tempered, using the same process as the more expensive blades and producing an RC60 cutting edge and RC40 shock-absorbing back. The temper line is authentic and prominent. The handles are wood covered with tough imitation rayskin then wrapped with suede in the tradtional fashion.
The scabbard is made of wood with a black lacquer finish and high quality strap, also with high quality purple storage sleeve
A superb item designed for everyday martial arts use.

» Paul Chen Practical Plus Katana «
No License Needed, handmade using traditional methods
The latest out in the 'practical' range. The piece measures 40" overall.
Differs from practical katana in that it has an updated tsuba (guard), genuine rayskin handle wrap and uses an updated leather wrap (Tsuka-Ito) specially developed for its gripping qualities, new images to follow. Also features a superior polish producing a more prominent true hamon on the blade and can be dismantled like the more expensive traditional swords, stuninng.
Please bear in mind this sword is still in the practical series and while finsihed to a higher standard than any sword in it's price band, the blade is not as cosmetically flawless as the more expensive Chen swords.
