B.UK Dark Prince Broadsword
ReviewsAdd review JP from UK 8: It's difficult to rate this out of 10 as there are bits I'd only score 6 & bits 10. Good bits 1st: 1; The blade is seriously good. The damascus steel is very nice, nice springy temper, spot on distal taper. Lenticular cross section also good with a very sharp edge of proper geometry. The only thing to critisise is the fuller which gets a little uneven in the 3rd towards the tip & ends off centre on both sides. Still 10/10 and for me is worth all of the price and more. 2: a much over looked aspect of swords - the scabbard. this one is very good for this price bracket. the leather is nice and fits well over the wood. It also fits the sword very, very well. You can hold it upside down & shake it without the the blaqde dislodging - which is a feat in itself if you read on. 3: Piened assembly means no rattles or loosness. 4: Point of balance (POB) is 1.5" in front of the cross guard & spot on for a fast handling one-hander but see below. Not good bits: 1: The overall weight. At 3 lbs 13oz (no scabbard) it's seriously over weight. Compare with my Hanwei/tinker great sword - a proper 36" bladed 2 hander - and 3 lbs 7oz. 7" longer & 6oz lighter. The POb, as I said, should make for a fast & agile sword but all that mass slows everything down again. It behaves correctly but you need a moderately strong forearm & wrist to safely weald this with one hand, which is a consideration given how sharp it is. There is enough room on the grip to use this 2 handed - just. then you get the promissed speed. The excess weight isn't in the blade but in the crossguard. It's way too chunky. 2: The apperture for the blade through the crossguard is too wide & the whole hilt assembly is askew by at least 5 deg. This could compromise it's cutting ablity. 3: I disagrre with the 'antique finish' description for the metal furniture. It's just got no finish at all. It's fettled (mould lines & burs belt sanded off) but otherwise left as cast & dull grey. The casting is good quality though. Conclusion: I'm very happy with it. It handles Ok - if you're strong enough - but for me it's all about the blade which would be at home on a sword 300 or more. If you're just starting with swords & want to see what a really good (damascus) blade should be like (& not too bothered about the rest) without the bill, this is a steal. The same goes if you're looking for a blade to rehilt (as I was). If you want a sword with authentic handling for a medieval sword it's not quite there. If you want a decorator - well for me it's all in the blade again & displaying it out of scabbard isn't a good idea. Related Products |
